KOTA KINABALU, July 8 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) wants to forge cooperation with the Sabah state government to carry out a student intake programme through E-Kasih for students who have good academic qualification but are not financially capable of furthering their studies.USM Vice-Chancellor Datuk Omar Osman said the university has autonomy to select their own students with a minimum of 100 a year for this special channel."Through this cooperation, children who have strong academics but are from poor families can send their children for a special intake at USM and the university will also help with other aspects," he told reporters at a function with the USM Vice-Chancellor and alumni, here yesterday.Omar said 200 students from Sabah and Sarawak were identified by the university for intake through the special channel and those who are really eligible will be chosen and placed in USM, whereby the intake period has been extended until September."This is to give time to the alumni to send and propose names of people for the special intake, provided that they are eligible in terms of academics, parents are poor, did not apply, live in rural area or those who work to help the family," he added. At the event, RM2,000 was allocated to expand the USM almuni secretariat in Sabah which had just recently appointed eight people for its supreme council.
