Sabah local authorities will increase their efforts in addressing the cleanliness and hygiene issues, said Datuk Hajiji Noor, Local Government and Housing Minister during his winding speech on the final day of the State Legislative Assembly meeting.
He told the Assembly that the launching of the Anti-Litterbug Campaign including the “trash-free” designation of commercial premises and litter-free emphasis at Tamu sites and government functions are some of the measures taken to promote cleanliness and public hygiene.
He said cleanliness at public places is a shared responsibility in the community and not the sole responsibility of the local authority.
“To seek the commitment and cooperation of the public, the local authorities will hold discussions with the public, NGOs, vendors as well as shop owners and restaurants.”
Hajiji also touched on the hygiene of the public toilets raised by the Api-Api Assemblywoman, Christina Liew. He said that his ministry is aware of the public toilets being rundown and dirty.
He said this year, all local authorities have been asked to list down the public toilets that need to be repaired, upgraded or rebuilt to enable the ministry to enable the Ministry to take suitable measures to rectify the problem.
“Once we get the financial allocation, we will carry out the project this year,” he said.
