KOTA BELUD: A frantic effort by a couple of villages here to rescue an injured baby whale was an exercise in futility. The baby whale was too heavy for just two men to move it.
Furthermore, the mammal was already injured as deep marks could be seen on its body, probably caused by a boat’s rotor.
It died a short while later.
A villager identified as Adi Susilo, 35, said there were couple of injuries found inflicted on the whale’s body and initial efforts was made to pull the whale back into the sea.
“We were quite surprise to find the baby whale, measuring about 2.5 meters in length, stranded along the Nanamun beach,” he said.
“We are not sure how the whale ended at the beach; maybe due to the change in weather or perhaps it was attacked,” he said.
Adi said villagers had contacted the relevant authorities including the Sabah Fishery Department for further action.
