TAWAU: At least two persons are looking forward to see Tawau being transformed into and education hub; one is the proposer herself, newly elected Tawau MP Datuk Mary Yap and the other is her political rival Sri Tanjong Assemblyman, Chan Foong Hin.
And despite being in rival political camps, Chan said he is more than willing to cooperate with Yap in ensuring the success of her dream for this south-east town bordering Indonesia.
Congratulating Yap on her appointment as the deputy Federal Minister of Education and Higher Learning, Chan (photo) said her position would all the more ensure that Tawau gets the boost it requires badly.
“It is my hope, as well as the hope of all the people of Tawau that Yap now delivers the promises contained in the Barisan Nasional manifesto, including transforming Tawau into an “education hub”,” he said.
“I sincerely hope that the MP can serve the wellbeing of Tawau better and more efficiently, and I am open to assisting her.”
The DAP assemblyman said Yap should perform well in her job since she had served as a super school principal before this, as well as being a member of the Advisory Panel that assisted the Ministry.
Chan also said he and the constituents was longing for Yap’s dream to build a university in Tawau, saying it was now not impossible, “provided she knows how to convince her boss, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.”
Apart from this, Chan also wants Yap to get the Government to construct a new Tawau coastal highway to ease the traffic jam and to develop the surrounding areas as well as to boost power supply so as to resolve the problem of constant blackout in Tawau.
He spoke of the need to build a bigger dam in the district and to replace old water pipes to stop the perennial water shortage problem and to upgrading internet connectivity so that hardware for information society is ready.
“All these are important to lay down a good infrastructural foundation for Tawau development,” he stressed adding there was an urgent need to implement the flood mitigation plan as well.
“Yap is very lucky in her political career since she has been given the chance to be actively involved regardless of her short involvement in politics, and that was the easy part. Now she must perform” he added.
While noting that PBS candidates used to sell “development” manifesto to Tawau voters in order to convince them to continue to support BN, which they did, he stressed that Yap must now deliver all that were promised during the election. Read more
