PASIR MAS: Koperal Ahmad Hurairah Ismail's girlfriend Nurdiana Kamaruddin finally got to meet his family but it was not a happy occasion. Ahmad had been shot dead and his body was brought home from Lahad Datu.
The soldier had planned to introduce her to his family and get engaged last month. The plan, however, had to be put off because Ahmad was put on stand-by for Ops Daulat.
But on Tuesday, their dreams were shattered when Ahmad died in a shootout with terrorists.
“I was overjoyed when Ahmad told me that he was going to introduce me to his parents and that we would be engaged. But now everything has ended,” said the 23-year-old final year student in Syariah Law at the Sultan Ismail International Ismail College when met at Ahmad's funeral at Kampung Bayu Lalang, Meranti, near here yesterday.
“I accept his death as fate. He died with honour for our country,” said Nurdiana.
It was a tearful and sombre moment as his 11 siblings, parents and close relatives opened the casket, draped with the Malaysian flag, to see him for the last time before it was taken for prayer and burial.
Meanwhile, Army chief Jen Tan Sri Zulkifli Mohd Zainal Abidin said Ahmad and his colleagues had fought gallantly in an open gunbattle with the terrorists before he was fatally shot. Two enemy gunmen were also killed in the incident.
Zulkifli also said it was illogical for the Opposition to claim that the intrusion was staged.
“The operations are real and the presence of the terrorists is also real. They are posing a clear and present danger for the country,” he said.
“Many have lost their husbands, sons and fathers. To think that everything is staged is illogical.”
